Many times when I get a call from a potential customer, the first thing they ask is, “What kind of panels do you use?” The majority of them say they want the most efficient or the highest wattage panel and also at the lowest price per watt. I want to break down what all these specs mean and help you make the best decision for your solar setup and become an expert in less than 10 minutes. Please stick around.
Hey guys, and welcome back to my channel. I get a lot of requests for a deeper dive into differences and types of solar panels. For today’s discussion, I won’t really go into details explaining what are the most important factors when choosing a specific solar panel. After this, you will be an expert in understanding the main factors, but most importantly, you will know the vital aspect that a lot of people do not talk about and actually make it more confusing to most people.
Solar Panel Efficiency vs Solar Panel Cost Per Watt
You will also see some real-world results after years of production from some of my customer systems. We’ll see some practical data that will prove my unpopular opinion. Let’s get started. The first thing I want to discuss is the panel wattage. This number is usually in the name of the panel itself. So, it is more noticeable than a lot of other specs. Most panels you will see on quotes will be between 350 all the way up to 460 watts. Commercial solar panels can go all the way up to 600 watts and even higher. When discussing wattage, we are talking about how much electricity a solar panel can produce under ideal conditions. Usually, that’s defined as 1,000 watts per square meter and 25 Celsius. It is essentially the panel’s output. While this is straightforward, there’s more to it than just meets the eye.
Just because a panel has a higher wattage does not necessarily make it the best option for your house. There are several things that cause wattage differences. One, panel size. Two, technology. And three, efficiency. One of the most important things to remember when choosing a solar panel is panel size, especially if you have a limited amount of optimal space to work with. The larger the panel, the more solar cells you can fit. So, they usually will produce more watts, but this does not always translate to more power for your specific roof.
Solar Panels Cost in 2025 and Space Efficiency
Let’s say you have a limited amount of southern exposure on your roof and you can fit either 10 450 W panels or 12 420 W panels. If we calculate the total system output, we have 10 450 W panels. That’s 4500 watts or 12 420 W panels. That’s 5,040 watts. In this case, the system with lower wattage panels actually produces more total power. That’s about 12% more because you can fit more panels in your available space. This demonstrates why higher wattage panels do not always mean the most optimal design for your specific situation. A good local installer should look at different options like this for you.
Some of you may already be thinking that more panels mean more money and this is again not always the case. Installers and ultimately the homeowner purchase solar systems based on price per watt not the amount of panels. So the lower wattage panel may have a lower price per watt compared to the newer higher wattage panel. In our example again the numbers may look like this. 10 450 W panels at $2.30 per watt is $10,350. Whereas 12 420 W panels at $2.25 per watt are going to be $10,332. While these numbers are random, you can see the spatial efficiency is actually extremely important. We are working on systems design. Not only could it be more cost effective, but in this specific case, you get more power for less money.

The next topic to consider is panel efficiency. This is one of the most discussed specifications in the solar industry. Major manufacturers compete constantly to claim the title of most efficient panel. Many homeowners assume that the highest efficiency panel must always be the best choice. For years, SunPower built its brand around this idea, selling systems at a premium by highlighting their panels’ top efficiency.
Their panels were often only about two percent more efficient than competitors, yet they cost around forty percent more. While the equipment was high quality, the return on investment was much longer because of the high upfront cost.
What Panel Efficiency Really Means
Efficiency measures how much sunlight a solar panel can convert into usable electricity. It is expressed as a percentage under standard testing conditions. For example, if a panel receives 1,000 watts of sunlight and produces 200 watts of power, its efficiency is 20 percent.
Efficiency does not change how much total power a panel is rated to produce. Instead, it determines how much physical space is required to reach that production level.
Space and Efficiency Trade-Offs
Consider two panels, each rated at 400 watts. One is 22 percent efficient, and the other is 20 percent efficient. Both generate the same 400 watts of power. The difference is size. The less efficient panel will take up more roof space, while the more efficient panel produces the same output with a smaller footprint.
For homes with limited roof space, higher efficiency panels help maximize savings. For homes with larger roofs, lower efficiency panels can still provide excellent results at a lower cost. In this case, efficiency becomes less important than overall affordability and installation quality.
Solar Panel Efficiency and Real-World Performance
The majority of current solar panels have an efficiency rating between 18% all the way up to 23 and more. But the majority of the ones you will be quoted are going to be within 1 to 2% of each other. One of the specs that does not get talked about as much is the temperature coefficient. This number, expressed as a percentage, tells you how much the panel efficiency decreases as the temperature increases above the standard testing condition of 77 Fahrenheit (25 C). Most panels are in the range of 0.24% REC panels all the way up to 0.5% per Celsius. A simple example to help you understand this: if a solar panel has a temperature coefficient of negative 0.3% and the panel temperature rises to 35 Celsius, that is 10° above standard, the output would decrease by 0.3% × 10 = 3%. So a 400 W panel may only produce 388 watts in hotter conditions. While this is a crude example, you can see how this can be a big factor when choosing a panel, especially in places like Texas where summer temperatures reach well over 100 Fahrenheit (37.7 Celsius). A better temperature coefficient can make a significant difference in long-term solar energy production.
Solar Panel Warranties and Longevity in Solar Energy Systems
Finally, the last thing I want to go into is the warranties, which I believe is the least important factor compared to efficiency, cost, or solar panel installation. I have seen other articles saying that warranties are the most important because if you factor it over the long term, it makes a difference. Now, this assumes that the panels actually degrade. I am not disputing this completely, but I want to show you real-world solar energy data so we can see how panels behave over time. For example, one of my customer systems installed in 2018 used 330 W polycrystalline panels with 17.1% efficiency. They came with a 25-year degradation warranty guaranteeing 85% output with a 12-year product warranty. The production is consistent over the years with variations due to weather, not degradation. This customer had no shading from trees, so we ruled that out.
Another customer system installed in 2019 used monocrystalline panels. Again, you see consistency in annual output with minimal degradation. Another system, a large pergola project in McKinney, used monocrystalline panels at higher efficiency, 19–21%, with an 85% degradation warranty. Finally, a system with Panasonic EverVolt panels showed a small decline from 2022 to 2024, but 2022 was exceptionally productive across all examples. These Panasonic EverVolt solar panels are at 92% production output at year 25 with 21.2% efficiency and one of the best temperature coefficients in the industry.
What Solar Panel Degradation Data Really Means for Homeowners
This is exactly what I mean. Those were the best panels at the time, but when analyzing production data, many people overlook factors that affect numbers. First, internet connectivity issues can cause monitoring gaps that look like reduced production. Second, system downtime due to inverter faults, arc faults, or critter damage can affect results. Third, shading issues play a big role. These are points for another video, but for now, remember that all Tier 1 solar panels include at least 25-year product and production warranties. Some brands like REC even offer a 25-year labor warranty for certified solar panel installation partners.
Solar Panel Cost in 2025 and Choosing the Best Solar Energy System
The product warranty protects you from manufacturer defects, but these claims are rare since solar panels have no moving parts. Production guarantees usually range between 85% and 92% depending on the solar panel technology. A warranty is only as good as the company backing it, so always choose a reputable manufacturer and an established local installer. The most important factor when choosing panels is spatial efficiency. How much optimal space you have should dictate what kind of solar panel to use. If you have limited roof space, higher wattage and higher efficiency with a good temperature coefficient may be the best option. If you have more space, lower wattage and less efficient solar panels may allow you to fit more panels, generating more power for a lower cost per watt.
You may also have acres of land for a large ground mount with lower wattage solar panels that can save thousands because you are paying by the watt, not by the panel. Your solar sales representative should always bring up different solar panel cost options, solar panel maintenance requirements, and overall solar energy design strategies to maximize your return on investment.
At the end of the day, remember that solar panels generate DC, but they are worthless without a reliable inverter.
